What if I told you that not growing your wealth is actually one of the most selfish things that you could be doing? Contrary to what we are taught in our society, growing one's wealth is not just our birthright. Which sounds great. It is actually a moral obligation. I'm Kristen Becker. I have been transforming my own relationship with wealth.

00;00;21;17 - 00;00;46;21
Unknown
I help other people to do the same. And something that I have discovered is that growing wealth increases your capacity to do good and to help others, and not growing your wealth actually handicaps you in that regard. What I'm going to share here today is probably going to contradict and challenge many of the lies that you have been taught about wealth and morality.

00;00;46;22 - 00;01;10;17
Unknown
However, if you're the kind of person who cares about yourself, who cares about your family, your life, the world, the other people in the world, and the well-being of others. This could very well be the biggest transformational shift that you could make regarding growing your wealth. If these ideas resonate with you and you feel empowered. Check out the Wealth Code.

00;01;10;17 - 00;01;34;20
Unknown
This is a free guide. It's linked in the description. It is filled with language models that you can use that will transform your own subconscious programing about wealth, because that's all these lies are subconscious programing and we need to turn them around for ourselves. And we all have the capability to do that. Let's begin with a framework that you probably recognize.

00;01;34;23 - 00;02;10;29
Unknown
This is Maslow's hierarchy of needs. All humans have these needs. And at the bottom of the hierarchy we have our basic needs security, shelter, food, clothing, water. We move a little bit higher up on the needs we have. Of course, the financial security. And it's only after those very basic needs have been met that we can even begin to move higher up in this pyramid to things like belonging, connectedness, relationship with others, self-actualization, and eventually even transcendence.

00;02;11;02 - 00;02;44;20
Unknown
But those aren't even an option until your very most basic needs have been met. This is truly fascinating research from Princeton and Harvard economists, published in science Journal, actually showed that the cognitive load from focusing on financial burdens is the equivalent of losing an entire night's sleep. It drops the IQ level by 13 points. Imagine how hard it is to even just meet your basic needs.

00;02;44;20 - 00;03;07;20
Unknown
Never mind going out in the world and doing your best good for other people when you have the significant cognitive impairment. And where does it come from? Worrying about money money related stress? So this is the equivalent of someone keeping you up all night. You're not allowed to sleep. And then in the morning they say, now go out there in the world and do something great.

00;03;07;22 - 00;03;28;29
Unknown
Do something great. Take care of yourself, get things done. And you're like, oh fuck, I'm so tired. I don't know what to do. I don't know where to start. Like, how is that going to turn out for you? Not good. And here's why. Because when we are in financial stress and we're focused on how am I going to pay the rent or this bill or the mortgage, or jockey things around to make this work?

00;03;29;01 - 00;03;50;13
Unknown
The part of our brain that deals with things like creativity, compassion, vision, generosity, that part of our brains, resources are not available to us. So how in the world are we going to go out there in the world and do great things and help make the world a better place when we ourselves are stuck in this financial survival mode?

00;03;50;15 - 00;04;14;08
Unknown
So you can see why this is what I call the wealth paradox. On the one hand, we've got all these things in our society really directing us towards not wanting to grow wealth. Or don't be that greedy person or money is the root of all evil, and yet we are cutting ourselves off at the knees. We are literally physically decreasing our capacity to make a positive impact to help others.

00;04;14;10 - 00;04;38;19
Unknown
So I invite you to think about this like the oxygen mask on the plane. What do they always say? Apply the oxygen mask to yourself before assisting others. And in that very same way, when you create a healthy wealth foundation in your own life, you're actually increasing your ability to have a positive impact for all the people whose lives you touch.

00;04;38;21 - 00;05;03;20
Unknown
A perfect example of this, with a transformation that I've experienced in my life is with my children. I adore them. I have always wanted to do the very best that I can for them in every way. Learning new things to do, how I can parent better and guide and support them better in their growth resources. However, when I was financially stressed, I was spread so thin I couldn't focus.

00;05;03;23 - 00;05;32;09
Unknown
And then when I transformed my own relationship with wealth and finances in my life, now I have more time. I have the ability to focus. I can be consistent. The impact has shifted in a huge, huge way is not because my intentions changed. It's because I changed the resources that I have in my time and my focus and my brain to become financially more comfortable so that I can do that for them.

00;05;32;12 - 00;05;54;19
Unknown
Now, this is an ethical framework that is rarely ever discussed in our society. Yet the facts are there. When you increase your own financial comfort, your own financial resources, then you can begin to solve problems outside of your own problems, outside of yourself to have a positive impact on the world. And I want you to please keep this in your head lights.

00;05;54;19 - 00;06;16;16
Unknown
Stay focused on this and you can start right now by asking yourself the question, well, what kind of a positive impact would I have? How much more impact would I have if money were no longer a limitation? Now, before I get all the haters in the comments, you know money is the root of all evil people. Let's be clear there are two ways to bring wealth into your life.

00;06;16;16 - 00;06;37;17
Unknown
You can bring wealth into your life through creating. You create value for others. You leave things better than you found them. That's one way to bring wealth into your life. Another way to bring wealth into your life is through extraction. You are taking advantage of other people. You're leaving things worse off than you found it. The people's lives, the environment, whatever.

00;06;37;19 - 00;07;03;12
Unknown
Because you are solely focused on extraction. In this conversation, of course, I am talking about creating wealth in a positive way. If you're already watching this video, if you're already thinking about the morals and ethics of wealth, maybe you never thought about this important distinction and which side of it you're on. And you could be a creator or an extractor in any job, career, or business.

00;07;03;14 - 00;07;27;01
Unknown
Two people doing the exact same thing can be either one or the other. You just want to look at what you're doing and ask yourself, am I leaving things better than I found them? Am I creating real value? Am I having fair exchanges of value? Because remember, money is just an exchange of value. When you create value for someone else, they give you money in exchange for that.

00;07;27;01 - 00;07;58;16
Unknown
It's literally just a token. And I like to think of myself as a steward for money. Money is just flowing constantly. It's not something we own. It's something that we steward for a temporary time as it flows on to the next organization or people or whatever. And with stewardship comes responsibility. I do lots of things. I'm always engaged with different projects and clients and businesses, and I like to use something that I call my purpose filter.

00;07;58;19 - 00;08;25;29
Unknown
When I am gauging into a new wealth circulating opportunity, I like to ask myself, okay, is this aligned with my core values? Am I actually doing something that feels rewarding to me? Am I creating value? Am I doing something that's creating more value in the world and for other people? And is doing this gonna increase my capacity to continue to have a positive impact, which could that could be in many, many ways.

00;08;26;02 - 00;08;48;27
Unknown
However, you could see how using the simple little purpose filter really helps you to always make sure that your wealth, income building and circulating is aligned with your integrity, with your character, with the kind of person that you are. Now let's get practical. Assuming that you're currently in financial survival mode, we need to start building a strong foundation.

00;08;48;28 - 00;09;09;04
Unknown
Even skyscrapers are only as good as their foundation, so we need to create a really strong foundation on which you can start growing your wealth. Here's the first four steps that you are going to want to start taking to build that strong financial foundation for yourself, so you can grow your wealth and continue to have a more and more positive impact in the world.

00;09;09;06 - 00;09;36;19
Unknown
Number one is to create some sort of a savings emergency fund. And this is really important because it gives you that mental peace, right. Not to have to worry about general expenses. The second thing to focus on is eliminating debt, because debt repayment and the interest associated with it is just absolutely draining your resources, as well as creating a lot of financial stress in your life.

00;09;36;21 - 00;09;58;27
Unknown
The third item in your foundation is to make sure that you create a rock solid foundation for your basic needs. Things like your housing, your health care, groceries and meal planning, and all of these things. You don't want that aspect, those basic needs in life, to feel stressful. So you want to focus everything you have right now on getting that really secure.

00;09;58;27 - 00;10;18;24
Unknown
So you always feel really safe around that. And once you do that with those three things in place, then you go up to the next level and you start looking at how can I increase my income, how can I scale up? Am I going to move up in my career path in this way? And because you have, your nervous system is now at peace.

00;10;18;24 - 00;10;44;08
Unknown
You're not freaking out about month to month expenses. Now you have those creative capacities in your brain and remember, you're still building your own foundation. We haven't gotten to the part where we're helping all the other people because apply the oxygen mask to yourself first before assisting others during phase one of building your foundation. I do suggest Contribue to others in some form.

00;10;44;08 - 00;11;07;18
Unknown
How ever small. It could be like 1% of your monthly budget or something that you maybe give to someone or an organization that you care a lot about, or contributing to assisting others. This is just to get us slowly into the habit of saying yes, that is a priority to me. That is something that I value. And if you absolutely can't give money, give your time.

00;11;07;18 - 00;11;32;24
Unknown
But again, it's just to mentally anchor that, like this is an important part of my character as a person. And then we want to move into phase two with this phase one, then that foundation is getting really solid. Your piece, you're feeling good. You're not stressed. Now what you're going to create in your life is energy. Those mental capacity is to start branching out and do more creative things and bring even more money into your life.

00;11;32;25 - 00;11;55;26
Unknown
So during phase two, you have more energy, resources, time. You kind of want to start looking at things like, what's the next step for me in my career? Am I going to really level up in that and do this, or am I going to do something with the business to grow a business? Or maybe I'm going to invest and I'm going to learn about dividends or something and grow my investment income and passive income.

00;11;55;28 - 00;12;18;04
Unknown
There are an infinite number of ways that you can grow your income, but now you actually have your brains, resources, and capacities to do so in a way that empowers you to understand what you're doing to make the right decisions. I've made other videos on that. Please check them out. This is just really simple. When you understand how your biology works to support you.

00;12;18;07 - 00;12;40;01
Unknown
So during this phase, you're also going to have the freedom to give more, to really think like, oh, maybe I want to change my career because something that aligns with my values more or my priorities more, or switch my business model around so that I can have even more of a positive impact. Because now you have those creative resources available to you to do it.

00;12;40;04 - 00;13;16;27
Unknown
Maybe it's even just like me with my kids when they were younger and I said, no, I'm going to streamline my life and I'm going to remove all this clutter and these extra expenses and just focus on, you know, adventures and doing things with them. The point is that in phase two, this is where you're really like, it's your glow up, you know, like as they say, and you're and you have the capacity to do these things now that you've always wanted to do, but you couldn't do before or because you were in financial survival mode in phase two, you're thinking a lot more about contribution.

00;13;16;29 - 00;13;44;29
Unknown
And I suggest a method which I talked about in my book free, like I call it the target method. And I say start closest to you. Think about the rings of a target right and look closest to you. Who do I want to help first? Right? With me, of course it was my children. But even thinking about, say, like spending or businesses that I might engage with or support or places that I work, who has the most impact in my community or in people's lives that I care about?

00;13;44;29 - 00;14;03;11
Unknown
And then just keep working your way out, but then it's going to be even closer to your heart, and you can see the results of what you're doing when you start closer to home. It just feels more natural. So that's phase two. Let's move on to phase three because it just keeps getting better. Okay, so we did phase one.

00;14;03;11 - 00;14;30;15
Unknown
We got the foundation set. We freed up our resources, moved into phase two, greatly expanding our wealth and our contribution, and making sure that the things that we're doing, we like, oh, I have choices, and I want to make sure they're aligned with my priorities. Phase three is all about strategic contribution. By the time you get to phase three, you have time, energy, resources, and probably some things that you really care a lot about.

00;14;30;15 - 00;14;51;17
Unknown
We really want to give back and contribute, make the world a better place and help others. And just imagine how amazingly good that feels. And this is why you see so many people as they become more and more wealthy, setting up foundations, giving to different organizations, and usually things related to something that had a meaning in their life righteousness.

00;14;51;19 - 00;15;13;06
Unknown
It just feels good. And this is how we go out in the world. We begin by applying the oxygen mask to ourselves before assisting others get that foundation laid, grow our wealth, and then we can be strategic and really focused like, yes, yes, I'm going to do this thing. I've always cared about this and I thought this could be done better.

00;15;13;09 - 00;15;41;26
Unknown
I'm really excited to contribute. So please, please, please remember this. The world needs you to be financially empowered, not financially struggling. When you are financially empowered, that is fuel for your vision, for your talent, for all the wonderful things that you have to bring into the world. And I want to leave you with this question, what would you do if money were no object right?

00;15;41;28 - 00;16;06;01
Unknown
There was no financial resources standing in your way. What thing would you do in the world? That's your thing. That is your thing. Let that thing motivate and empower you. And most importantly, give yourself the freedom to have that be okay. It's okay for you to be successful. It's okay for you to bring your best self out in the world.

00;16;06;03 - 00;16;10;00
Unknown
It is okay for you to be wealthy.
